Why are CSCS Cards a Mandatory Requirement in Construction?

What are CSCS Cards?

CSCS (Construction Skills Certificate Scheme) cards are personal licenses that show proof that an individual has the technical ability to carry our construction work safely and effectively. Most people working in construction must have completed the relevant training for their specific job, however, to be “on-site” they must hold a valid CSCS card.

This scheme is adopted by all construction companies across the UK to ensure that the workforce is appropriately qualified, and that safety standards in the UK are being improved. There are currently over 1.9 million people that hold a valid CSCS card in the UK.

Why are CSCS Cards Important?

According the Construction Skills Certificate Scheme, CSCS cards were set up in 1995 to set up a construction landscape that is safe, smart, and professional. The construction industry urgently needed a way of ensuring that companies are following operative regulations and that construction workers are adhering to strict health and safety standards. A way of tackling this issue the Construction Skills Certificate Scheme began to deploy several types of CSCS cards to provide proof of a person’s working ability. Although there is no legislative rule for carrying a CSCS card, all construction companies in the UK specifically advise workers that without one, they will not be able to go on site.

How many CSCS Cards are there?

There are 13 different types of CSCS cards that you can obtain in the UK. They are all dependent on the type of construction work you want to carry out and what sort of career you want to obtain. For the full list of CSCS cards that Construction Helpline offers.
